In honor of our commitment to helping our community and those in need, as well as the concurrence of National Roofing Week, we are excited to share the story of John Bachner, whose new roof we recently completed. The project was one that showed the philanthropic nature of our industry as TAM donated their skylights, MacArthur Co. provided materials at a considerably reduced rate, and a majority of the workers’ time and labor was provided free of charge.
On September 5th, John Bachner suffered a nearly fatal accident when the truck he was riding blew a tire, struck a tree, and rolled off of I-90 about seven miles from Ellensburg. The incident ejected John from his vehicle and broke his shoulder blades, fractured every rib in his body and even broke the bones in his face. John is now paralyzed from the waist down and fights every day for the grace to walk again. Like a true Washingtonian, what broke John’s heart regarding the incident was losing his highly cherished Seahawks Super Bowl sweatshirt as they had to cut it off him to examine the aftermath of his crash. John received tremendous support from the 12’s during his long and ongoing recovery. Though his body was in shambles, his soul was strengthened by the love and support from fellow 12’s, a visit from Doug Baldwin and a phone call from Momma Lynch. “It’s amazing. It doesn’t matter who you are, if you are a 12, people will come and pick you up,” John said. In a heartfelt video documenting the details of his crash and the attempt to continue a fulfilling life, John comments that the crash brought him the blessing of being able to spend a much larger chunk of time with this family. The family is closer than ever and though the need for wheelchair accessible activities is restricting, they find many ways to be together, whether it be going to movies or attending church every Sunday.
The journey to render his home completely wheelchair accessible and functional was one time and expense heavy. Our crew came in and attempted to lift John’s spirit through their hard work and prayer. For the roof project, we utilized the GAF Everguard® TPO 60ML Membrane System. We also incorporated 1/4” Dens-Deck and
installed new 3” Drop Scupper Drains with TPO Flange. Rigid ISO 6.2” Insulation was enacted over the living space and half the carport and an Acrylic Dome TPO Skylight was the last piece of the beautiful finished product. Our sales estimator, Joel, went to middle school and junior high with John and was so excited for the chance to facilitate his hard transition. “I want to be part of Johhny’s transformation of healing, of the mind, of the body, and most importantly, his spirit,” Joel expressed. We are so proud to have been a part of this project and John’s journey! We have been touched by seeing his path to recovery and the love and support received from neighbors, friends, and fellow 12’s. Here is to wishing John and his family a blessed and successful transition and restoration! Go Hawks!Â
