Want the Cedar Shake look without the Cedar?
Cedar shake makes for a beautiful roof and has been a traditional roofing material for centuries. But it is expensive to maintain and repair, so when it comes time to replace the roof, some opt for a modern alternative. Today, there are several options that maintain that traditional look, but at a lower cost. Lets explore some of those options below.
GAF Ultra-Premium Designer Roofing Shingles
GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, has a large selection of shingles to choose from. Here are a couple that would be great wood shake alternatives.
Grand Sequoia® Shingles and Grand Canyon® Shingles are the ultimate choice for a rugged wood-shake look, offering incredible depth and dimension that will astound even the most casual observer. These high performance shingles also come with stain guard protection against ugly blue algae and holds a class A fire rating.
Glenwood® Shingles are the most authentic wood shake-look shingle you can buy, featuring an ultra-dimensional design that delivers all the natural beauty of real wood shakes. With the highest fire rating, and enhanced colors to choose from, this is an ideal choice. The Glenwood® features triple-layer design that creates a highly desirable ultra dimensional look with all the natural beauty of real wood shakes. Click here for more info.

Malarkey Roofing Products Windsor XL Shingles
This shingle was introduced by Malarkey Roofing Products in 2014 as their first designer shingle line. This was a joint effort with contractors to offer the look of a traditional cedar shake roof with the more simple installation that asphalt shingles have to offer. “The new heavyweight shingles offer a more pronounced design on the roof while maintaining the fortified durability of their original shingle lines” Click here for more information on the Windsor XL shingle by Malarkey Roofing Products.
Owens Corning
Owens Corning offers the Woodcrest and Woodmoor shingles that take on the natural look of wood shakes, but with less maintenance. Coming in eight colors that are inspired by nature, yet give your roof a pop that real wood can not provide, the only difference between these two shingles, is the thickness. The Woodmoor is thicker and a heavier weight compared to the Woodcrest, giving you even more of a designer look. Click here for more information on all that Owens Corning has to offer.
Certainteed
Certainteed offers several shingles that resemble the look of real wood shake. Let’s explore 3 of those choices. The Presidential Shake shingle is “the original luxury shingle created to replicate the look of cedar shakes with the performance of fiber glass construction”. And now there is Presidential Shake TL (triple laminate). This luxury shingle offers the look of cedar shakes and the performance of one of “the finest composition roofing solutions in the industry”. Triple laminate means that it has 3 layers of material, making it the industries thickest, heaviest shingle.
Landmark TL offered by Certainteed is another shingle with three laminated layers of the industry’s most durable materials. With the classic look of hand-split cedar, the random tab design, and unique natural shadows, this shingle gives a high-end feel to your roof.
Certainteed boasts that the Arcadia is the new standard in premium architectural roofing. Inspired by the iconic look of split wood shake, this shingle is formed from a high-grade blend of roofing asphalt. At a fraction of the cost, the Arcadia outperforms natural wood, is virtually maintenance free, and has a superior fire and wind resistance!

Should my contractor be walking on my roof using cleated boots/shoes? Will the tiny holes compromise the longevity of our shakes?
If you have to walk on a shake roof, using cleats is safe. Non-cleated footwear is too dangerous. The cleats do puncture the shake by dimpling the top side of the shake up to a quarter inch. The more traffic, the more detrimental to your shake roof. As much as you can stay off of the roof, the better.
