Lighting is one of the most mood-creating elements of a home. With poor lighting, living spaces can feel smaller and lead to feelings of sluggishness.
Opening windows goes a long way towards creating a sense of abundance inside any home. The outdoor light gives the most natural feel and grows the living space.
But most homes don’t have windows in every place you may want them. Hallways, bedrooms, offices, kitchens, and stairwells frequently don’t have adequate access to outdoor light.
A possible solution many use is artificial light. Ceiling lights or adding lamps to dark places in the home can make them more visible, but that tends to be where the benefit stops.
Artificial light adds little to the sense of space that outdoor light does. Nobody knows exactly why this is, but our minds can truly tell the difference between light generated by the sun with light generated by electricity.
Since there are many places in a home that you can’t put windows, what can you do to bring natural light in? Often the answer is to install skylights.
The chief benefits of skylights are twofold:
- They bring in that natural light that improves mood in ways that electricity-generated light can’t.
- The angle and depth of the lighting reveals the living space in a way that nothing else can.
Many homeowners find that once they have a new skylight installed, their living space feels larger and more abundant. This can be a truly remarkable improvement in any home. It’s tough to change the actual size of a room, but bringing in new light can have that unpredictable effect of showing you more of it and making you feel more at home in it.
