Emergency Roof Repairs 101

Roof Repair Tips

Roof Repair Auburn WaEven though roofs are built to last decades, extreme weather conditions such as hail, high wind or heavy rains often cause premature & significant damage that most likely has to be addressed immediately.

Appropriate repairs should be handled as soon as weather allows to do so safely, as a damaged roof may directly affect the stability of the entire structure of the house.

While you wait for your roofing contractor to handle the repairs, there are certain things you as a homeowner can do to temporarily stop the leaks in their tracks and avoid any further damage.

  • Safety first! Do not attempt to climb the roof in adverse conditions. Wait for the wind, hail, rain or lightning to stop first. This sounds like common sense but many homeowners will desperately try anything to protect their home, risking their health & life in the process. Once the bad weather moves out you can assess the condition of your roof safely.
  • Start the inspection from the ground up and figure out the most effective way of stopping further damage before a roofer has a chance to handle repairs.
  • Try to gain control over the spread of the water seeping in and further damaging the internal structure. Tarp & buckets are better than nothing.
  • Remove any puddles of water or stagnant water forming on the roof.
  • If you can successfully locate, then plug the source of the leak by whatever means necessary, that will make the most impact. Use patches, rubber sheets, sealants, tarps even duct tape. Your solution may not be pretty or long-term but will buy enough time for the roofer to get in there and repair the damage in a more permanent and appropriate way.
  • As always, remember to stay safe and take special care to not inflict further damage to your roof.

Most roofers provide emergency repair services. When choosing a roofer, make sure they are licensed, insured, can provide you with references, warranty information and a written, detailed estimate.
