GAF Timberline HD Shingles: Certified Roofing Contractor’s Review
At Chase Construction NW, Inc., we’ve been providing top-notch roofing services in the Northwest for over 20 years. In that time, we’ve installed just about every type of roofing material available. Among the products we trust and recommend to our clients are GAF Timberline HD Shingles.
With over 15 years of experience working with GAF products, we can confidently say Timberline HD shingles stand out due to their durability, ease of installation, and lasting performance. Our goal is to share what makes these shingles such a great choice for homeowners looking for a balance of quality, protection, and aesthetics.
Why GAF Timberline HD Stands Out in the Roofing Industry
GAF is a leader in the roofing industry with over 100 years of experience. Their Timberline HD shingles are America’s #1 selling shingles, a title earned through consistent quality and innovation. What makes GAF Timberline HD shingles special?
- Proven Performance: GAF has rigorously tested its shingles to ensure they stand up to the harshest conditions. The GAF shingle has a 4.8 out of 5 star consumer rating, almost perfect. This is based on 2,748 reviews.
- Advanced Technology: These shingles are made using Advanced Protection® Technology, which reduces resource use without sacrificing strength.
- Long-Lasting Reputation: GAF has been at the forefront of roofing innovations, and their commitment to excellence has set them apart from competitors like CertainTeed and Owens Corning.
Key Features of GAF Timberline HD Shingles
- Durability: The Advanced Protection® Technology used in Timberline HD shingles ensures they withstand weather elements like wind, rain, and hail. These shingles are also resistant to cracking, giving you a longer-lasting roof.
- Lighter Weight, Easier Installation: GAF reduced the weight of these shingles from 240 lbs to 220 lbs per square. Some brands criticized this, but GAF’s Fit vs. Fat campaign proved that less weight doesn’t mean less durability. The lighter shingles are easier for contractors to install without sacrificing performance.
- Wind and Fire Resistance: Timberline HD shingles have a wind resistance rating of 110 mph, with an option to upgrade to 130 mph. They also have a Class A fire rating, the highest available, which means maximum protection for your home.
Technological Advancements in Timberline HD Shingles
In 2011, GAF introduced its Limited Lifetime Warranty, a game-changer in the roofing industry. This was possible due to advancements in the materials used in their shingles. Unlike competitors who didn’t change their products but still offered similar warranties, GAF improved their mats, making Timberline HD shingles stronger and lighter.
With Advanced Mat Technology, GAF shingles are easier to install, last longer, and provide more value than competing brands like CertainTeed and Owens Corning.
Environmental Benefits and Sustainability
GAF is committed to minimizing environmental impact. The Advanced Protection® Technology used in Timberline HD shingles reduces the consumption of natural resources while still providing long-lasting protection.
These shingles are also fully recyclable at the end of their life, making them an eco-friendly choice. So, when you choose Timberline HD, you’re not just protecting your home—you’re also contributing to environmental sustainability.
Weather Protection: Tested in Extreme Conditions
GAF shingles are tested under the toughest conditions, ensuring they’ll hold up no matter where you live. Timberline HD shingles are built to withstand:
- Heavy rain and storms.
- High winds, with a wind resistance rating of up to 130 mph.
- Heat and cold, ensuring that your roof performs well year-round.
In addition, GAF’s StainGuard Plus™ algae protection keeps your roof looking new, protecting it from unsightly algae growth. This is especially important in humid climates where algae can stain your roof.
Color & Design Options: Enhance Your Home’s Curb Appeal
Timberline HD shingles come in a variety of colors, designed to suit any home style. GAF’s High Definition® shadow bands create depth and dimension, giving your roof a beautiful, finished look. Whether you prefer natural wood tones, sleek grays, or traditional browns, there’s a Timberline HD color option that will complement your home.
Installation Benefits for Homeowners
When it comes to roofing, a proper installation is key to getting the most out of your shingles. Timberline HD shingles are designed to be easy to install, which reduces the risk of errors and makes the entire process quicker for homeowners.
As certified GAF contractors, we at Chase Construction NW, Inc. ensure your shingles are installed correctly and efficiently, giving you a roof that’s built to last. Plus, working with certified contractors unlocks enhanced warranty options for added peace of mind.
GAF’s Unmatched Warranty Protection
GAF offers some of the best warranties in the industry, especially when installed by certified contractors. With Limited Lifetime warranties and a Good Housekeeping seal of approval, GAF Timberline HD shingles are a reliable choice for homeowners seeking long-term protection.
You also get coverage with GAF’s 25-Year StainGuard Plus™ Algae Protection Limited Warranty and their 15-Year WindProven™ Limited Wind Warranty when combined with GAF accessories.
Comparing Timberline HD with Other Shingle Products
While other roofing products, like CertainTeed Landmark or Owens Corning Duration, are well-known, GAF Timberline HD consistently outshines them in key areas:
- Durability: GAF’s Advanced Protection® Technology enhances shingle strength while reducing weight.
- Wind Resistance: Timberline HD shingles outperform many competitors with their 130 mph wind rating.
- Warranties: GAF offers better warranty options, especially for algae and wind protection.

Thanks Roofing Contractor in Houston, I agree 100%.
Your write-up is truly informative. A lot more than that, it??s engaging, compelling and well-written. I would desire to see even far more of these types of fantastic writing.
I live in New York, & I undersdtand that the GAF TIMBERLAND is a great Shingle, but HOW DOES THE OWENS CORNING SHINGLE COMPARE? ARE THERE DIFFERENT GRADES
OF OWENS CORNING SHINGLE?
Owens corning has a great wind warranty. I prefer GAF due to combining the best strengths of the ELK/GAF shingles. GAF also introduces the advance mat technology in 2011 and the first limited lifetime shingle. OC and the other manufacturers offer limited lifetime shingles as well, but made no changes to their shingles to justify the extended warranty coverage.
